Sportmart Plaza Caters to Today's Lifestyles
The 73,000 square foot Sportmart Plaza opened on May 1, 1996
with two new superstores adjacent to Barnes & Noble at
16300 W Bluemound Rd. in Brookfield.

The retail center is home to Sportmart, a national sporting
goods chain, and Linens 'N Things. The 43,000 square foot
Sportmart is the parent company's second store to open in
the Milwaukee area this spring.
Sportmart stocks over 60,000 products for active lifestyles,
ranging from sports attire to exercise equipment. Each store's
interior is broken up into "concept shops" such
as the Cheering Section (licensed apparel) the Fairway (golf)
and the Campsite (outdoor equipment and apparel).
The 30,000 square foot Linens 'N Things focuses primarily on
home textiles. A subsidiary of Melville Corp., the chain store
is shifting to a larger space format, opening bigger stores
and closing smaller ones. In 1995 Linens 'N Things added about
one million square feet of selling space nationwide.
Beyer Construction broke ground on the $3.3 million project
last September. The building pad was stripped and raised nearly
10 feet with approximately 30,000 cubic yards of structural
fill.
The project remained on schedule in spite of a very wet October,
big snow storms in November and the Blizzard of '96. Due to
a long lead time required for steel shipments, project owner
BMF Land, Inc. purchased steel for the job well ahead of construction,
avoiding potential delays. BMF selected Zimmermann Design Consultants
as its architect for the project.
